Paraty was originally settled by the Portuguese around the 1660’s. The city preserved its history shown in the architecture, harmonizing with the gorgeous landscape of forests, 65 islands and more than 300 beaches. Surrounded by the luscious Atlantic Forest, Paraty was, in the 18th century, an important outlet for the gold and precious stones brought from the state of Minas Gerais to be shipped to Portugal. Later, Paraty had a significant economic importance due to its sugar cane mills (it used to have over 250 distilleries): the name "Paraty" is, to this day, a synonym of a very good sugar cane rum (Brazilian Cachaca). Paraty is a perfect place to relax, soak up the culture and enjoy nature in a peaceful environment.
