Day 1 Depart USA Evening departure. Meals and refreshments served on board. Day 2 London Upon arrival in London, we will be met and transferred to the hotel. In the afternoon, we will visit John Wesley's Chapel and house, Bunhill Field (once a burial ground of the Dissenters), with the graves of Susanna Wesley (John and Charles Wesley's mother), John Bunyan, Daniel Defoe, William Blake and other famous people. We will be at Aldersgate Street, where John Wesley underwent a profound religious experience while attending a meeting of the Moravians, Charter House, the school that John Wesley attended, St. Luke's, Wesley's Parish Church, and Susanna's birthplace. Dinner at the hotel and overnight. Day 3 London/Lincoln/Epworth/Leicester Today we go to Lincoln, once a Roman town, where we visit the Norman founded cathedral (1074). We shall see the glorious central tower, the priceless stained glass windows, the Lincoln Imp, the Angel Choir and the Wren Library. At the Chapter House, one of the stained glass windows depicts John Wesley's last visit to Lincoln. We continue to Epworth, birthplace of John and Charles Wesley. Here we stop at the Old Rectory, Memorial and Parish Churches. Our day of travel will end in Leicester for dinner and overnight. Day 4 Leicester/Coventry/Stratford/Oxford Depart Leicester for West Bromwich to visit the boyhood home of Francis Asbury, one of the first Bishops of the Methodist Church. Then drive to Coventry, heavily bombed during WWII, where we admire the beautiful new cathedral, rising against what is left of the old cathedral destroyed in WWII. Continue to Warwick, with its castle dominating the town. Then, Elizabethan Stratford-upon-Avon, intimately associated with William Shakespeare. In Stratford we shall visit the Memorial Theatre, Shakespeare's birthplace and Anne Hathaway's cottage. On our way to Oxford, we travel across the scenic Cotswolds. We finally arrive in Oxford, a city famous for its old university, for dinner and overnight. Day 5 Oxford/Cotswolds/Gloucester/Bristol Morning tour of Oxford, including Lincoln College and Church College, where John Wesley graduated in 1724. In the afternoon, we leave Oxford to nearby Gloucester. We shall visit the small church from which Anglican layman Robert Raikes launched the Sunday School movement and where the Women's Missionary Movement began. It is here also that the minister George Whitfield, one of the founders of Methodism, helped spread the Great Awakening in Britain and, especially, in the British North American colonies. We will visit Gloucester's magnificent cathedral and then continue to Bristol, a city long linked with the Wesley's, for dinner and overnight. Day 6 Bristol/London After breakfast, we will join in service in the Wesley's New Room, the oldest Methodist chapel in the world, established by John Wesley in 1739, to be seen today much as it was in the 18th Century. We will also see Charles Wesley's home before proceeding to Salisbury to visit its unique cathedral. Not far from Salisbury is prehistoric Stonehenge, dating back to time immemorial. Continue to London for dinner and overnight. Day 7 London Full day at leisure. London has much to offer, from historic churches, public buildings, theater, cosmopolitan cuisine and great shopping. Optional city tours and excursions are also available. Day 8 London to USA (or extend your stay) Morning transfer to London Airport for your return flight home. Meals and refreshments are served aloft. |
