Explore its palazzo, gardens and then continue to glamorous Monte Carlo (Monaco), known for its harbor, dazzling entertainment and famous Casino. Return to Nice via the hilltop village of Eze. Dinner at a Nice restaurant. (B,D) Day 4 Thu Nice/Saint-Paul de Vence/Cap d'Antibes Our first visit is Saint-Paul de Vence and its picturesque narrow streets. Stop for lunch in Vence. Here you may visit Matisse's Rosaire Chapel (limited opening) and the 11th century cathedral of St Veran with its mosaic by Marc Chagall and Chagall's chapel. Overnight in the coastal region of Cap d'Antibes. (B) Day 5 Fri Cap d'Antibes (Cannes) Today we visit Cannes, the star of the Riviera, famous for its film festival, glitzy hotels, shopping, the old port, beaches, exotic sports cars, and yachts. Walk the renowned "Croisette" promenade and later drive to the breath-taking summit of Pic de l'Ours. (B) Day 6 Sat Cap d'Antibes/Aix-en-Provence Our journey continues along the spectacular coastline of the Cote d'Azur to Aix-en-Provence, a town founded by the Romans. Explore its old quarter and admire the Saint Sauveur Cathedral (legend says a temple of Apollo once stood here). Dinner at a local restaurant and overnight in Aix-en-Provence. (B,D) Day 7 Sun Aix-en-Provence Today we relax in Aix-en-Provence. In the walking tour, see the hot thermal springs, the Pavillon de Vendome, the Musee des Tapisseries, and Paul Cezanne's studio (almost as he left it in the 1900s). Afternoon free to enjoy the town at your own pace. (B) Day 8 Mon Aix-en-Provence/Avignon Heading further inland and through spectacular vineyards, we drive to the walled city of Avignon, once home to Catholic Popes. The Palais des Papes dominates its historic centre. Another must-see is the St. Benezet Bridge of "Sur le pont d'Avignon" fame! Overnight in Avignon. (B) Day 9 Tue Avignon We meander through the vineyards of the Cotesdu-Rhone, one of the best wine producing regions in France, to visit two of the Roman Empire's best achievements, both UNESCO World Heritage Sites - the Pont-du-Gard aqueduct and the Roman theatre of Orange. End the day visiting a famous wine cave for a tasting. Return to Avignon. (B) Day 10 Wed Avignon/Aigues-Mortes/Arles Today we turn south to the Camargue area, home to rich biological diversity and unique breeds of horses, bulls and more than 400 species of birds, including pink flamingos. Our first stop is the walled village of Aigues-Mortes ("dead waters"). St Louis created its port to set out for the Crusades. Then on to Arles, once a major Gallo-Roman city, where, for a time, Van Gogh and Picasso lived. Enjoy dinner at a local restaurant. (B,D) Day 11 Thu Arles Morning walk through the narrow streets of Arles, as if scenes by Van Gogh himself. Visit the Roman Amphitheater, once seating 21,000, rivaling those of Rome, and the local market. The afternoon is free. (B) Day 12 Fri Arles (Les Baux-de-Provence) See the Huguenot stronghold of Les Baux-de-Provence, placed on a rocky outcrop and home to 22 historical listed buildings. See the castle and Saint Vincent's Church. Back to Arles via Saint-Remy-de-Provence. Dinner at a restaurant. (B,D) Day 13 Sat Arles/Marseille/Nice Brief visit to Marseille and its old port, gateway to the Orient and Africa. This city is a thriving melting pot of cultures. Return to Nice along the scenic and picturesque coastal road. In Nice exciting dining venues await for your farewell to the Cote d'Azur. (B) Day 14 Sun Nice to USA (or extend your stay) Transfer to Nice Airport for your return flight home. Meals and refreshments served on board. (B) |
