(B,L,D) Day 5 Messina (Italy) A early morning arrival in Messina. Two exciting optional shore excursions are available. The first is to medieval Taormina, a town that charmed famous visitors as diverse as Winston Churchill and Truman Capote. Admire the outside of Gothic Corvaja Palace and visit the impressive Greek Theatre, its upper tiers revealing spectacular views of Mt. Etna. End the tour with free time in Taormina, a complete pedestrian town. The second excursion takes you to Mt. Etna, arriving at Cratere Silvestri (about 6400 feet from sea level). Mt. Etna is Europe's largest active volcano soaring up to 10,800 feet. Resume sailing in the early afternoon. (B,L,D) Day 6 Kotor (Montenegro) After a delightful morning of sailing the Adriatic Sea northbound, you touch land in Kotor in the early afternoon, where its old port is protected by UNESCO. No less than 3 optional excursions are available. The first is to the fortified island settlement of St. Stephan; then Budva, dating to the 2nd century B.C.; and finally Kotor, for a walking tour. See the 9th century Cathedral of St. Tryphon, and the outstanding Maritime Museum. The second excursion goes to Perast, a true museum town. Off the coast of Perast, you will see the baroque church of Our Lady of the Rocks. Return to Kotor for a walking city tour. (B,L,D) Day 7 Split (Croatia) Early morning arrival at Split, where you may join one of the three optional excursions. The city tour takes in the Ivan Mestrovic Gallery, the city centre and the old town with its famous Diocletian's Palace, a structure meant as a mausoleum of the Roman Emperor, later turned into a Catholic Cathedral. You will also see the Temple of Jupiter, in time becoming a Baptistery. Another optional excursion goes to the Krka Waterfalls and its 17 natural cascades located in the Krka National Park where you will also see Skrandinski Buk Waterfalls, the highest falls in Europe.
