Day 1 Depart USA Evening departure. Meals and refreshments served on board. Day 2 Berlin Arrival at Berlin Airport, where you will be met and transferred to your hotel. Balance of the day is at leisure. Dinner at the hotel. Day 3 Berlin Morning sightseeing includes the Reichstag, which once housed the German Parliament, and Schloss Charlottenburg, the city's former royal residence built in the 17th century. View the Opera, the Schiller Theater, Brandenburg Gate, the "Wall" and the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church. Afternoon is at leisure and dinner at the hotel. Day 4 Berlin/Wittenberg/Leipzig This morning, following breakfast, proceed to Wittenberg, designated as "Lutherstadt" ("Luther Town"). It was here that in 1519 Luther debated with John Eck, leading to a papal ban and where Luther posted his 95 theses to the door of the Castle Church, thus sparking the movement that would become the Reformation. After a view of Wittenberg key sights, proceed to Leipzig for dinner at the hotel and overnight. Day 5 Leipzig/Eisleben/Erfurt/Eisenach This is Luther country, but Leipzig is also home to many wonderful artists, musicians and poets, such as Johann Sebastian Bach, Felix Mendelssohn, Robert Schumann, Goethe and Schiller. You will visit where Bach served as choirmaster for 25 years and is buried at Thomaskirche. Travel via Eisleben, where Luther's houses of birth and death are well preserved museums. Eisleben's Luther sites were granted World Heritage status. Continue to Erfurt and see the flamboyant gothic Cathedral and the Augustinian Monastery where Luther was ordained. Overnight and dinner at the hotel in Eisenach. Day 6 Eisenach After breakfast your day of sightseeing begins with a visit to the house where Johann Sebastian Bach was born and also visit Luther House, which is now a museum dedicated to the life of the Reformer. See Wartburg Castle, an imposing fortress that is a symbol of German pageantry and offers splendid panoramas of the city. Dinner at the hotel and overnight in Eisenach. Day 7 Eisenach/Marburg/Worms/Frankfurt Eisenach is left behind after breakfast as you begin a full day of sightseeing. First is the medieval city of Marburg, famous for its magnificent Gothic Cathedral where locals often dress in traditional peasant costume. In the afternoon, we embark on a brief Rhine cruise past castles, vineyards and charming villages. Afterwards, we continue to Worms, one of Germany's oldest cities, where Luther appeared before the Diet. Here you will tour the Luther Monument and the Church of Our Lady (Liebfraukirche). Dinner at the hotel and overnight in Frankfurt. Day 8 Frankfurt/Berne/Geneva Travel to Geneva via the Rhine Valley. Enjoy a brief stop in Berne, Switzerland's capital city. Berne is an excellent example of preserved Medieval architecture. Sights include the Bern Cathedral, the well over 3 miles long shopping arcade, the Houses of Parliament and the French Church. Continue on to Geneva which is situated on Lake Geneva between the Alps and the Jura Mountains. Dinner and overnight at the hotel. Day 9 Geneva Today's tour includes many sights associated with John Calvin. Sights include the St. Peters Church, Maccabee Chapel and Calvin College Reformation Monument that pays tribute to Protestant reformers including Knox, Farel and Luther. This evening, enjoy a farewell dinner. Day 10 Geneva to USA (or extend your stay) Morning transfer to Geneva Airport for your return flight home. Meals and refreshments are served aloft. |
