The balance of the day is at leisure. This evening enjoy a welcome dinner at a local popular restaurant. Day 3 Rome This morning experience a very special spiritual experience by attending the weekly Papal Audience & Blessing given by His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI (subject to Vatican schedule). Guided tour of the priceless collection of art and treasures in the Sistine Chapel and Vatican Museum. The Sistine Chapel is one of Michelangelo's greatest achievements. Continue with a visit to the tomb of the Popes including Pope John Paul II. The tour will end with St. Peter's Basilica, the largest church in the Christian world, built over the tomb of St. Peter. The rest of the afternoon is at leisure to explore on your own. Day 4 Rome Today we will experience "Christian Rome", including the Catacombs on the ancient Appian Way, St. John in Lateran, St. Mary Major, and St. Paul Outside the Walls. Then proceed towards Piazza Venezia, the Arch of Constantine, the Roman Forum and Colosseum a testament to the greatness of Rome's past. As we drive back to the hotel, view Circus Maximus, Isola Tiberina and Castel Sant'Angelo. You may end your visit for time at leisure at Spanish steps, Trevi fountain area. Day 5 Rome (Monte Cassino/Pompeii) Depart for Pompeii and en route stop in Monte Cassino to visit the tomb of St. Benedict. The Benedictine Abbey, used as a stronghold during World War II, was destroyed and it was rebuilt and reopened in 1966. We continue our drive through the Naples area, stop in Pompeii for lunch followed by a walking tour of the city, destroyed and buried by Mt. Vesuvius in 79 A.D. eruption. Visit the Shrine of our Lady of the Rosary of Pompeii before your return trip to Rome. Day 6 Rome Day at leisure to enjoy on your own or take one of the optional city tours of out of town excursions. Day 7 Rome (Assisi) After breakfast, we depart Rome for our excursion to Assisi. We will visit the tomb of St. Francis. Explore the quaint hilltop birthplace of St. Francis that still retains something of the atmosphere of the early 1200s, the period when St. Francis began his ministry. Contained within the huge 13th-century Basilica are many of the saint's possessions and a series of frescoes depicting his life. You may kneel before the crucifix from which Jesus spoke to St. Francis, asking him to rebuild His church. It was in St. Mary of the Angels Basilica where St. Francis spent most of his life. Here we visit the Chapel, Portiuncola, the rose bush, and the cave where the saint retired for prayer. Stroll the medieval streets of the compact little town. After stopping at an outdoor cafe with a view of an ancient Roman temple, we go to the Church of St. Clare to see the saint's incorrupt body. The foundress of the Order of Poor Clares followed the teachings of St. Francis by living a life of poverty and humility. We will visit these two saints' tombs before returning to Rome for dinner and retiring for the evening. Day 8 Rome Today enjoy a day at your leisure for rest, relaxation, exploration or shopping. In the evening there will be a festive Farewell dinner in a typical Roman restaurant. Day 9 Rome to USA (or extend your stay) Morning transfer to Rome Airport for your return flight home. Meals and refreshments are served aloft. |
