Santorini differs from the other islands of the Cyclades, as a result of the activity of a now dormant volcano, with steep coastline to the west and vast beaches on the east. From your landing point on the island you can climb up to Fira, the capital, by foot, car or donkey-back. A funicular railway will avoid hundreds of steps. Fira is a very attractive little town with winding narrow streets and arcades. On the highest peak of Santorini is the monastery of the Prophet Elijah. The village of Ia, a place of incomparable beauty, with little houses hewn out of the soft rock, offers a superb view of the sea, and is famous for its sunsets.
