Day 1 Depart USA Evening departure. Meals and refreshments served on board. Day 2 Rome Morning arrival at Rome Fiumicino Airport, where you'll be met and transferred to your hotel. The balance of the day is at leisure. This evening enjoy a welcome dinner at a local popular restaurant. Day 3 Rome This morning experience a very special spiritual event by attending the weekly Papal Audience & Blessing given by His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI (subject to Vatican schedule). Guided tour of the priceless collection of art and treasures in the Vatican Museum and visit the Sistine Chapel, one of Michelangelo's greatest works. See the tomb of the Popes including Pope John Paul II and end the tour in St. Peter's Basilica, built over the tomb of St. Peter. The rest of the afternoon is at leisure. Day 4 Rome Today's focus will be "Christian Rome", including the Catacombs on the ancient Appian Way, St. John in Lateran, St. Mary Major, and St. Paul Outside the Walls. Then, see the Arch of Constantine and the Colosseum � a testament to the greatness of Rome's past. Driving back to the hotel, view Circus Maximus, Isola Tiberina and Castel Sant'Angelo. Day 5 Rome/Monte Cassino/San Giovanni Rotondo Depart Rome for Monte Cassino to visit the tomb of St. Benedict and Benedictine Abbey. The abbey, used as a stronghold during World War II, was destroyed. It was rebuilt and reopened in 1966. We continue to Pietralcina, home town of St. Pio. Visit the city center and St. Pio's home before going to San Giovanni Rotondo. Dinner and overnight at your hotel. Day 6 San Giovanni Rotondo (Monte Sant'Angelo) Start with Holy Mass at the tomb of Padre Pio. Visit the sanctuary and all steps of St. Pio's life. See the crucifix from which he received the stigmata in 1918. Tour the Gargano Peninsula and stop at Monte Sant'Angelo to visit St. Michael the Archangel cave. Return to San Giovanni for dinner at the hotel. Day 7 San Giovanni Rotondo/Lanciano/Loreto/Assisi Today, we drive to Lanciano where we will see the Eucharistic Miracle and celebrate Mass. We then continue to the great Marian shrine of Loreto to visit the Holy House of Nazareth and the Madonna of Loreto. More than 50 popes have made a pilgrimage to the house transported by angels to this hill in central Italy in 1294. Tradition has it that this is the house in which Mary first prayed the Magnificat, in which Jesus grew to manhood, and in which the Holy Family lived. Continue to Assisi for dinner and overnight. Day 8 Assisi Full day to explore Assisi, birthplace of St. Francis. At the Church of St. Clare, we'll see the saint's incorrupt body. The foundress of the Order of Poor Clares followed the teachings of St. Francis by living a life of poverty and humility. Visit the 13th-century Basilica and the Tomb of St. Francis in the lower basilica. It was in St. Mary of the Angels Basilica where St. Francis spent most of his life. Here we visit the Chapel, Portiuncola. Dinner at the hotel. Day 9 Assisi (Orvieto) Daily excursion to Orvieto, famous for its Cathedral that houses the Eucharistic Miracle of Bolsena. After a Holy Mass, drive through hills and picturesque villages to Assisi. Day 10 Assisi/Siena/Florence Departure for medieval Siena, birthplace of St. Catherine and St. Bernardine. Start visit at St. Dominic Basilica to view the incorrupt reliquary scull of St. Catherine. Stroll through famous Piazza Del Campo, known for its bareback horse race. Visit the Basilica of St. Francis, containing miraculous consecrated hosts that remained intact since 1730. In the afternoon drive through beautiful Tuscany to Florence, a city that drew to itself the greatest minds and artists of the Renaissance. Dante, Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Raphael, Botticelli, Donatello and many others. Dinner at the hotel and overnight. Day 11 Florence After morning Mass, enjoy a guided walking tour of Florence which includes the magnificent Franciscan church of Santa Croce, burial place of Michelangelo, Galileo and Machiavelli. See Piazza Signoria, Palazzo Vecchio, and Santa Maria del Fiore, a 13th century cathedral. An optional tour to Pisa is available. Florence also offers great shopping. Day 12 Florence/Padua Departure for Padua, where St. Anthony, patron saint, is honored. After Mass at the Basilica, the tour includes one of the oldest universities, St. Anthony's Tomb and Relics. See the basilica of Santa Giustina. Dinner at the hotel. Overnight in Padua. Day 13 Padua (Venice) After breakfast, depart for Venice. Visit St. Mark's Square, the Golden Basilica of San Marco, view the Bridge of Sighs. Our tour will end with a Murano glass blowing demonstration. After the tour you may spend time at some charming cafe or take an optional gondola ride. Return to Padua for our Farewell dinner and overnight. Day 14 Padua/Venice to USA (or extend your stay) Morning transfer to Venice Airport for your return flight home. Meals and refreshments are served aloft. |
