Amalfi, one of Italy's most popular resorts, boasts a glorious seafaring history, rivaling Genoa, Venice and Pisa for control of the trade routes to the east. Various historical events altered its fortunes. The town's mild climate, however, revived interest in Amalfi, when the British upper classes, in the early 1900's made Amalfi one of their preferred winter resorts. Major sites include the 9th century Duomo of St.Andrew, with an oriental facade and a baroque interior. Also the 11th century Arsenal della Repubblica, a center of shipbuilding, customhouses, and warehouses, where ten stone piers still remain. Equally noteworthy is the Municipal Museum, highlighting the original 66-chapter of sea law codes (Tavole Amalfitane), which were used throughout the Italian Mediterranean from the 13th to the 16th centuries.
