Description

These salt flats in Bolivia are a natural wonder that are not only awe-inspiring, but also seem to be the best place to play with perspective. With reflections that play tricks on the eye and constant bright sunshine, Salar de Uyuni is a veritable dreamland for the photographer.

Itinerary

Day 1 - UYUNI I SALT LAKE & INCAHUASI I COLCHANI

Arrival in Uyuni airport with immediate departure on a full day tour of Salt Lake and Incahuasi and Isla Pescado. Uyuni is the largest salt lake on Earth, covering nearly 5,000 square miles on the Bolivian Andean High plateau. This is a weird, bone-dry landscape of spiky cacti, flat horizons and all-encompassing silence. Dotted with lakes tinted by minerals and algae, patrolled by colorful flamingos, this is surely the most unearthly place on earth. At Isla Pescado, also called “Inca Wasi,” discover an oasis with formations of algae and fossils, covered by thousands of giant columnar cacti that can live more than a hundred years and grow to more than 36 feet tall. Needless to say, this other-worldly landscape is heaven for photographers. Overnight at hotel. (B, Picnic, D)

Day 2 - COLCHANI I UYUNI I THUNUPA VOLCANO I COLCHANI I UYUNI

After breakfast, enjoy an excursion to the small village of Tahua, at the foot of Thunupa Volcano. Stroll through the village and hike to the cave of the Coquesa Mummies, a group of Uru Chipaya people from1200 years ago, who may have died from poisonous gases seeping up from underground. Thanks to the bone-dry conditions, they are remarkably well preserved. After the tour, we go back to the hotel. (B,D)

Day 3 - COLCHANI I UYUNI I LA PAZ TO USA (OR EXTEND YOUR STAY)

Transfer to the airport for your flight back to La Paz. Upon arrival, transfer to your hotel. (B)
