A France travel package to Biarritz and Bordeaux for 7 days
Bordeaux & the Basque Country
7 Days from $2,155
Day 1 - Bordeaux
Arrival in Bordeaux. Meet with your driver-guide and start
your guided tour of Bordeaux. From the vestiges of the Middle Ages to the
elegance of the 18th century, you will learn about its different golden ages
dominated by the wine trade and various colonial influences. Tonight
dinner is in a traditional restaurant. Overnight in Bordeaux. (D)
Day 2 - Bordeaux/Medoc Region/Bordeaux
Today you will visit the Medoc
region of Bordeaux. Home to pine forests, sand dunes and many
thousands of acres of vineyards, and wedged between the Atlantic
coastline and the broad Gironde estuary, the Medoc is effectively a
peninsula. It extends 50 miles (80 km) north-westwards from Bordeaux city
to the Pointe de Grave headland whose sandy, gravelly terrain hints at what
lies beneath the Medoc vineyards, and makes the area quite so well suited
to viticulture. Enjoy visits of two estates followed by wine tasting sessions
before returning to Bordeaux for overnight at the hotel. (B)
Day 3 - Bordeaux/Arcachon/Bordeaux
Today we travel to the Arcachon
basin, a vast lagoon on the Atlantic coast. We begin with a visit to the great
dune at Pilat, the highest dune in Europe at an altitude of 107m. At the
summit, the view is awe-inspiring. Next we head for Arcachon, where we
have a boat trip on the Arcachon basin. We visit a sturgeon farm and enjoy
a caviar tasting before returning to the hotel in Bordeaux. (B)
Day 4 - Bordeaux/Bayonne/Biarritz
Today we travel into the Basque
country. Stop in Bayonne for a guided tour. See its characteristic arcades
and facades of stone, old canal streets and fortifications, the Cathedral
listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the Atelier du Chocolat.
Continue to Biarritz, a fashion hot spot and sprinkled with some of the most
beautiful ''Belle Epoque'' villas of France. Tonight dinner is at a local
restaurant. Overnight in Biarritz. (B,D)
Day 5 - Biarritz/Espelette/Ainhoa/Biarritz
This morning we visit Espelette,
a French village proud of its pepper heritage and the traditional methods of
growing and drying them. We continue to Hasparren, where after a visit of
a typical Basque farmhouse, you will enjoy a cheese tasting. Stop in Ainhoa,
a lovely walled town, before heading back to Biarritz. (B)
Day 6 - Biarritz/Saint-Jean de Luz/San Sebastian/Biarritz
Today you will
visit Saint-Jean de Luz, a jewel in the Basque Country. This pretty small
beach city is just dripping with charm, from its port lined with colorful boats
to its boutique shops selling surfing gear and lessons year-round. Continue
to San Sebastian, an international resort where the boulevards,
restaurants and cafes are reminiscent of the fashionable atmosphere of
the 19th century. Overnight in Biarritz. (B)
Day 7 - Biarritz/Bordeaux to USA (or extend your stay)
Morning transfer to
airport for your return flight home. (B)
